Advances inweld technologyand techniques require equally advanced testing capabilities. To ensure the future integrity of welds in oil and gas pipelines, Element has developed one of the best and market leading independent capabilities in Immersion Ultrasonic Testing (IUT) services currently available in the global oil and gas sector.
This enhanced version of Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) improves accurate sizing and reduces the risk of missing defects in girth welds, to help make certain of the pipelines quality and provide you with the assurance that the pipeline is free from critical defects before deployment in the field.
Immersion Ultrasonic Testing (IUT) is particularly relevant for discovering smaller defects, which helps improve Probability of Detection (POD). It also increases the number of indications that can be identified. From cracking to porosity; incomplete penetration and lack of sidewall fusion, each can compromise pipeline girth weld strength at critical parts within the weld. The process can also support a broad range of requirements as it can be applied to any kind of girth weld up to 48”, any wall thickness, as well as any material.
Immersion Ultrasonic Testing (IUT) services – improving on Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT)
Fusion flaws in narrow gap and shallow angle groove welds are difficult to detect with traditional radiographic testing methods. Automated Ultrasonic Testing was developed to address this, but accurately determining the size and location of these flaws has remained a challenge.
Element has therefore developed these new Immersion Ultrasonic Testing techniques to not only identify an increased number of defects, but also to increase the Probability of Detection and reduce both the risks associated with undersizing a flaw and the costs of needlessly fixing flaws which have been oversized.
Element’s Immersion Ultrasonic Testing capabilities can help you identify:
- Cracking
- Inclusions
- Incomplete penetration
- Lack of sidewall fusion
- Porosity
- Other weld strength defects
- Welding certification
- Metallurgical failure and investigation
- Corrosion and fatigue testing and consultation
